Setting materiality when revenue is lumpy

How we talk through planning materiality with finance teams whose sales arrive in uneven monthly waves.

Lumpy revenue is common in project-based manufacturers and trading houses around Taipei. A single shipment in March can dwarf February, which makes a straight percentage of annual revenue a blunt instrument if applied without conversation.

Start with the user’s decisions

We ask who will use the audited statements. A bank watching covenant headroom cares about different misstatements than a parent consolidating a small component. That answer shapes whether we lean toward a lower planning materiality or accept a wider band with tighter performance materiality on revenue cutoff.

Look at the shape, not only the total

We plot monthly recognized revenue against shipment dates and contract milestones. Clusters near period end get extra sample weight. Quiet months still matter for expense testing, but they rarely drive the revenue materiality debate.

Document the judgment

The planning memo records the percentage chosen, the benchmark (revenue, assets, or profit before tax), and why. When a partner later challenges the figure, the memo should answer without a second workshop.

If your close shows wide monthly swings, bring the last twelve months of recognized revenue to the scoping call. We will show how that chart changes the sample plan before fees are finalized.
